The nearly $1.6 billion redevelopment of the Port of Savannah’s Ocean Terminal reached 55 percent completion in June, moving one of Georgia Ports Authority’s largest current infrastructure projects past the halfway mark.
Georgia Ports said the 200-acre terminal is being rebuilt to increase annual container capacity from about 200,000 twenty-foot equivalent units to 1.75 million TEUs. The first of two vessel berths had been upgraded, while work on the second berth was expected to be completed by late June. Together, the berths will provide about 2,650 feet of dock space and allow two large vessels to be accommodated simultaneously.
The terminal’s new gate complex was about 80 percent complete when the milestone was announced. Plans called for 12 inbound and six outbound lanes, while a $29 million Georgia Ports-funded overpass provides a direct route for outbound trucks toward U.S. 17 and Interstate 16 without using neighborhood streets.
Georgia Ports expects the first half of the renovated container yard to open in fall 2027 and the full yard by the end of 2028. During construction, Ocean Terminal continues to handle limited container traffic and can also provide lay-berth space for vessels waiting to move to Garden City Terminal.
Ocean Terminal handled about 84,000 TEUs in calendar 2025. Georgia Ports said the redevelopment is part of a broader expansion program intended to raise Savannah’s total annual container capacity to roughly 9 million TEUs by 2029.
The project is significant for Savannah maritime businesses because it adds berth space and terminal capacity close to the city’s urban waterfront while also changing truck circulation around the terminal. Construction progress will remain an important local port beat through the planned 2028 completion.
